Psycho III
Oh, don’t worry, I’m not done yet with my 1986 movie marathon yet. The 20th film on the agenda was Psycho III, a film I barely remembered anything about — I wasn’t even sure I’d ever seen it, until I saw the suicide in the bath sequence, which I recognized for some reason. I don’t remember…

Blade Runner
Following The Fifth Element, the second part of last night’s double bill was a re-watching of Blade Runner — I watched the 2007 “Final Cut” edition. It’s just astounding that a film that was made 35 years ago still looks as groundbreaking and slick as it it did back then — which just goes to show…

The Fifth Element
Excited as I am for Luc Besson’s upcoming Valerian film (I’m even currently re-reading the Valerian graphic novels), and also the new Blade Runner film coming out later this year (for which we just got a great new trailer), I decided to do a double bill last night of the two films that connect to…

Sunday Morning Cartoon Cavalcade Vol. 8
I thought this week’s Samurai Jack was a bit on the weak side, but I did enjoy the coming together of Jack and Aki — yes, it was bound to happen, but it was still satisfying to see them embrace at the end. Tangled was Tangled (I like the series for the animation more than the…

Hacksaw Ridge
I didn’t really know what to expect going into this, as I didn’t know this story, and what a surprising one — to the point where when it does happen (saving multiple soldiers on the battlefield) it comes off as Hollywood grandstanding, but learning it pretty much happened like that was eye-opening. As for the…

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
I like me some military action movies, and I liked the first Jack Reacher movie fine. The follow-up is pretty good too. Nothing earth-shatteringly good, but definitely entertaining. I wouldn’t mind getting another one.

Demolition
This was great. Sure, Jake Gyllenhaal is one of my favorite actors, so I already tend to like stuff he’s in (like last year’s Nocturnal Animals), but this was also a discovery for me of director Jean-Marc Vallée, and now I really need to watch his previous films, Wild and Dallas Buyers Club. But yeah,…

Something Wild
This is still such a fun movie. Kicking off with a theme song by Talking Heads, and then just a great soundtrack overall (and then The Feelies performing some great covers during the high-school reunion scene). Melanie Griffith was never better, and it’s fun seeing young Jeff Daniels like this. Definitely worth revisiting.

The Money Pit
There’s a lot of fun to be had with screwball comedies of the 80s like this one. I think it’s aged fairly well, and I had a pretty good time watching it again. It’s also fun to see young Tom Hanks in action, and to revisit good ol’ Shelley Long and Alexander Godunov. I miss those…

Stand by Me
Stand by Me is just as good now as it ever was. It’s aged incredibly well, and watching it again last night, I was so there again, following these boys on their little adventure, with that classic soundtrack perfectly accompanying the proceedings. Also, maybe it’s just because I watched it so many times back in…
