  • Being Tokyo

Being Tokyo (@beingtokyo) is a #rocur (“rotation curation”) Twitter account that sees a different person based in Tokyo take over each week to share their personal take on the city, and this week it’s my buddy Gueorgui who has taken control, until October 4.

  • YMCK October Calendar

Looks like chiptune band YMCK has been sharing a special calendar each month — pictured here is the just-released October one (from this tweet). Also, YMCK vocalist Midori Kurihara will be DJing tomorrow night (Sunday, October 2) at the 8bit Cafe in Shinjuku, 19:00 to 23:00. Found via Tokyo’s Coolest Sound.

  • PauseDraw for October 2016

The next edition of PauseDraw — PauseTalk‘s sister series all about drawing — is just around the corner, taking place on Sunday, October 16, at 16:00, at Shibaura House, the same place as last time (pictured in this post). As always, it’s hosted by Tokyo’s two favorite drawers, Luis Mendo and Adrian Hogan.

  • Rodney Fun Shop

Want to get some lovely Parappa the Rapper and Rodney goods? The Rodney Fun Shop (or RodneyFun.Com Shop) is there for you, jam packed with all manner of merch covered with the art of Rodney Alan Greenblat’s characters. So much stuff I’d love to get here. And speaking of these characters, a new series of…

  • Nine Leaves

I really love the branding work done here for Nine Leaves, a Japanese craft rum. It was produced by Yasu Kageyama, a creative director at Brew. Found via Canvas.

  • Reason Behind Forms

I’ve been a longtime fan and supporter of the work of Nosigner (aka Eisuke Tachikawa, whose monicker is now the name of his firm), covering many of his early works in my “On Design” column and elsewhere, and it makes me happy to see that he’s gotten to a point where he’s headlining his own show…

  • Ginza Place

The latest project from my former employer (and good friends) Klein Dytham Architects is a gorgeous one, and takes the form of the brand new Ginza Place building in Ginza, which hosts swanky new showrooms for Nissan and Sony. It opened today. Here’s how KDa’s Mark Dytham describes the project: Our latest project, Ginza Place, opens…

  • Mother 1+2 Piano Concert

If I was in Tokyo today, I would have made a point of going to Joseph’s Pico Pico Cafe for a piano concert of music from the first two Mother games (known as EarthBound in the west) by Kousuke Hata. You can also purchase two CDs of his Mother music at the cafe.

  • Tokyo Section of the Rio Paralympics Closing Ceremonies

I just watched the Tokyo section of the closing ceremonies for the Rio Paralympics, and wow, it was even better than the one that was presented at the end of the regular Olympics. Again produced by Shiina Ringo, it just feels more stylish, includes AyaBambi, and ends with a cover of Pizzicato Five’s “Tokyo wa…

  • PechaKucha + Aichi Triennale 2016

It’s good to see that my PechaKucha family is still going strong, and I loved seeing in the latest Japan newsletter that they’re going to produce a special PechaKucha Night as part of the Aichi Triennale 2016 (on September 22 in Nagoya). Pictured, an image from the presentation by performance arts curator Akiko Fujii.
