I just finished my 1984 movie marathon (following 1967, 1968, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993), and it does feel like the proper end of something. The first of these year-based movie marathons I’ve been doing was for movies from the year 1985, that I did in 2017, and I’ve now completed the 80s — after I finished 1989, on top of continuing into the 1990s with a marathon for 1990, I looped back and did one for movies from 1980 (both of these were done in 2020).
When it comes to 80s movies, I think 1984 (or arguably 1985) is the quintessential year when it comes to what we think of as 80s movies: blockbusters, lots of sequels (or the start of franchises), silly comedies, etc. And so watching all of the movies listed below (with links to my mini reviews on Letterboxd — and here’s the full thread on X) felt incredibly fun. I think it was fitting that I watched most of them during the summer. Despite the fact that I watched 30 of them, I still skipped a lot that would be considered classics, but that I wasn’t really in the mood to re-watch because I’d done so already over the years (Terminator, Dune, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.)
What’s next? I’ll be continuing in my 90s run by going through movies from 1994, which is looking like a great year (I already have close to 60 films on my potential watchlist).
