To kick off this year’s October horror marathon (here’s what I watched in 2018 and 2019) I started by watching The Rental on October 1. Seeing the cast that was involved, I was expecting this to be a lot better than it ended up being. I did finally sort of enjoy it during the last 15 minutes, but for most of the movie I was bored out of my mind. The setup is just ridiculously long, and it takes about an hour before anything truly interesting (meaning, horrific) starts happening. But even if things finally get better towards the end, you don’t really get a satisfying ending. After I was done watching it, I read that the director, Dave Franco, would like to do a sequel and already has the story in mind, and that’s what this ending feels like. We have zero details on the motivation of “that” character, and so there’s no reason to really care about what’s happening.
