As Yuko has been enjoying the Ghost in the Shell TV series, STAND ALONE COMPLEX, a lot lately (it’s shown on Monday nights after MONSTER, and before that after GOKUSEN), we decided to pop in my DVD copy of the movie last night. I hadn’t watched it in years, and was very pleasantly surprised to see that it was as good as I remembered it to be, if not better (and the animation, state of the art when it was released in 1995, has aged well). I think there are different aspects of the film that you come to appreciate more with time, and it seems that everytime I see the film I come out of it with different thoughts on it. And I can say that the setting of Hong Kong is frightingly realistic, even down to the signs and famous areas (I’ve been to HK for the first time since last seeing the film, so it wasn’t something I was able to appreciate in previous viewings). It definitely made me and Yuko even more excited about seeing the sequel, INNOCENCE (and curses to the Roppongi Hills Virgin Cinemas for cancelling the English subs).
