The Latest from Toco Toco
I haven’t posted about Toco Toco recently, but it continues to be one of my favorite web series, and so let me remind you that you should really check it out if you’re on the lookout for a beautifully produced series of documentary shorts covering Tokyo creatives. The last 3 episodes cover accessory designer KAE,…

Lyrical School
I have a thing for female rapping in Japanese — it’s a sound I really love, starting with Halcali, and followed by a few artists since. I’m not in love with all of their songs, but there’s something neat about the hip-hop idol group Lyrical School, who are about to release their first major label album,…

Daicon III & IV
Following on my 80s anime playlist, I re-watched the two Daicon shorts, which I still find to be fantastic, especially the second one. These are animated shorts that were created for two conventions — Daicon III and IV — and have never been released commercially since they liberally borrow from all sorts of famous properties.…

Soy Shape
I really love this video that shows how my buddy Duncan Shotton is putting together his latest product, the limited edition Soy Shape dipping dishes. As you’ll see, one of the difficult aspects of the process is the packaging, which is done by hand by Duncan and his lovely wife (pictured). Found via Canvas.

Tokyo Reverse
Have 9 hours to spare? How about spending it watching a 9-hour long video tour of Tokyo, following a man who is walking in reverse the whole time, but with the video presented in reverse. I’ve only scanned parts of it, and it’s strangely mesmerizing to watch. Found via Tokyo Soup.

GameCenter-DX Plays The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I’m of course a huge fan of GameCenter-CX and Arino Kacho, regularly watching old episodes. But more than just a gaming celebrity, Shinya Arino is also a Japanese comedian, part of a duo called Yoiko, and his partner is Masaharu Hamaguchi. Nintendo has often partnered with GameCenter-CX to promote some of its releases — notably…

Japanese Professionals
Really great ad by Nissan revealing the matter-of-fact care and professionalism you tend to see in everyday work life in Japan. I showed this to my wife, and to her, she didn’t really see what was so special about the ad, which I think supports the premise of the ad. The ad is part of…

40 Years of Tokyo Style in 1 Video
I love this video so damn much. Produced by retail chain Beams, it’s a whirlwind tour of Tokyo style/culture over the past 40 years, compiled in a fun 5-minute mix of motion graphics and music. 40 years of fashion styles and music, and it makes me feel old when I think that I was there…
