  • Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

I’m going to go against the grain and say that I actually quite enjoyed watching Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. My friend James didn’t like it much, as he wrote in this review, and although I can’t fault a lot of the points he brings up, I was dazzled by the visuals. The action sequences are all…

  • Manifest Destiny

I love board games and card games, and strangely enough I’d never heard of Manifest Destiny, a Japanese indie publisher that makes tons of card games, most of them designed by a person who goes by the name Kuro (real name Yasushi Kuroda). A lot of them seem to have English releases (or are multilingual, with English PDFs…

  • Mother 1+2 Piano Concert

If I was in Tokyo today, I would have made a point of going to Joseph’s Pico Pico Cafe for a piano concert of music from the first two Mother games (known as EarthBound in the west) by Kousuke Hata. You can also purchase two CDs of his Mother music at the cafe.

  • The Legend of Zelda Meets Ghibli

The following trailer by Matt Vince for an imaginary The Legend of Zelda animated film by Studio Ghibli is borderline torture (while being fantastic at the same time). Oh to dream for such a thing to happen. He created the trailer following the popularity of a few posters he produced last year that imagined such a…

  • RYO-Z & PES & Tofubeats & PlayStation

Sony tried something new with the sizzle reel that kicked off its pre-Tokyo Game Show PlayStation conference yesterday. The great 5-minute video features RYO-Z and PES of the group RIP SLYME, rapping about the included games on top of beats provided by Tofubeats. It’s fun stuff, and makes for an entertaining way to take in the lineup.

  • Miyamoto Talks Super Mario Run

Following last week’s announcement that Nintendo is producing a new Mario game for iOS, Super Mario Run, The Verge was quick to share this interview with Shigeru Miyamoto himself, on what the thinking is behind the game (set to come out in December). I thought it was a pretty big deal to see Miyamoto join…

  • New Galak-Z T-Shirt

My buddy Jake Kazdal runs his 17-BIT studio from Kyoto, and the latest game they launched was the fantastically fun shooter Galak-Z: The Dimensional (out on PC and PS4, with a mobile version on the horizon). I love this new Galak-Z t-shirt that just launched on Fangamer — you can bet I’ll be adding it to…

  • Maricar

When I was still living in Tokyo, near Shibuya, it happened a few times that I was having a coffee at Starbucks with my dog, and in front of me I saw a line of people dressed up as Nintendo characters (Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach) drive by in supped up go-karts — Mario Kart come…

  • Shiny Shiny 2&3

Another entry I quite enjoyed from the Dotmov festival is the music video for Chikyunokiki’s “Shiny Shiny 2&3,” which takes inspiration from classic shooter Xevious. It was directed by Patanica, who also directed Qrion‘s “Crystal” music video I mentioned last month.

  • Controller of Controller

Yesterday I wrote about this year’s edition of the Dotmov digital film festival, and I just watched one of the entries which I quite enjoyed, Controller of Controller. Directed by Densuke28, it’s an Inception-like experience of a player playing a game, and then playing a game within that game (see, told you it was Inception-like).…
