No doubt... brakes are a good thing. This is what my 5th bike would be. Love it!

Hahaha... Everyone needs a fifth bike! I'd never want a fixie with no breaks, too intense for me. Pondering what my next bike will be, but won't be able to buy anything prob before summer 2010.

That is a sweet video. I like the white handlebar and stem combo. That's what I have too! I remember the first time I saw a messenger with a fixie with no brakes in NYC in '87. I thought, "What the...?" I still do. I'd love a single speed WITH brakes though. Do I need a 5th bike? Of course!

F.I.G.is cool. Along the same lines I like the Protech shops:

http://www.protech-kk.co.jp/home.html

The guys at my local shop will fix a flat for a housewife's mamachari, and then turn around and sell a fixie.

On weekends I ride with the team from Friend, who I used to race for when I lived in Tokyo full-time. It's 6 stories of bliss!

Yeah, I didn't know most of those shops either, just Y's (well, the Ikebukuro one), and F.I.G. But yeah, the bike shops are like many other kinds of shops in Tokyo: very specialized.

Ohhhh.... my favorite subject! I can't believe I haven't been to a couple of those shops yet. I keep running out of time when I'm there. Guess I'd rather be riding, but did go to 6 that I hadn't been to before. The bike shops in Tokyo are fun though. They have stuff you can only buy online or special order in the States. The messengers et al drive it all... the shops have just followed their lead.
