I was slow in picking up the latest issue of MONOCLE (April 2008) — only did so today — and was absolutely shocked to see that this month’s “Expo” piece was on the Moncton Flight College in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. See, Moncton is my hometown, and it’s definitely not the kind of place that gets much international coverage (even national coverage, for that matter). Certainly a pleasant surprise.
Also, make sure to take a look at Dan Hill’s fascinating rundown of the work he did as web and broadcast director for the magazine. He left the magazine at the end of March, and so it also acts as a farewell piece to the magazine and brand he helped build.

Moncton represent!!!! Moncton in da house ;) hahaha.
you didn’t link to momuses big fart on monocle over at clit opera.
True. I think I’ve linked to Momus dissing MONOCLE in the past, so didn’t really feel like it was necessary to do so again. I like the magazine, despite its few negatives (yeah, I’m also not crazy about advertorials, and simply don’t read them).
Hey… I’m not seeing this article in their archive!
And yes, as of a few days ago, I am a subscriber.
(I also don’t read advertorials. They are ads, after all. Why would anyone pay much attention to magazine ads? Can’t wait to install AdBlocker Plus in my retina, though. Gonna be awesome.)
You’re a subscriber, wow! I’d love to subscribe, but I still think it’s a bit too expensive. Then again, it would probably be cheaper than buying each issue like I do (and I have every issue since the first one).
It seems that they never put the “Expo” section on the site. Seems like they should though.
Weird.
Yeah, I couldn’t think of what to ask for as a birthday present. Magazines wound up being the only thing I could think of that I usually want, but can never justify paying for.
And yes—with a subscription each issue is ruffly 1500円. Pretty hefty discount methinks. (I thought it was weird that Dan Hill said that it’s more per issue with a subscription, to cover the online content, and made me check my math again. But I’m pretty sure I’m correct.)
With the Japanese cover price (around 2300 yen), yes it is a nice discount. The reason he said that is because in other countries, the magazine isn’t so expensive. I think the US cover price is around $10.
That’s an awesome present!
