Eyescream, Brutus, PEN, Title

  • TITLE (91) presents what makes a “Good Read for Samurai-Business,” so we get a round-up of classic Japanese samurai fiction that supposedly instill lessons on the way to do business. There’s also a giant feature on 24, to go with the release of the 6th season here on DVD, and the magazine even includes a DVD with the first episode, to whet your appetite.
  • PEN (204) turns in a terrific issue with their “Viva Comics!” feature — a really nice look at sequential art from around the world, including creators sharing their favorites. The “Up & Coming Directors” piece tells us who we should be watching out for in the world of Japanese cinema these days, with the featured profiles covering Yuki Tanada, Gunjyo-Iro, Yoshihiro Nakamura, Naoko Ogigami, Yoshihiro Takagawa, and Koji Maeda.
  • BRUTUS (622) takes a “Holiday in the Park,” with coverage of parks from Japan and the world.
  • EYESCREAM (2007/9) delves into the sexy side of things with it’s “Love & Ero” issue. Porn actress Maria Ozawa is on the cover, with a pictorial inside photographed by Yasumasa Yonehara (he also shoots Kozue Ayuse).

  1. I got my hands on this month’s Idea magazine! I miss reading it; we got a copy in MN since my coworker Andrew was featured in it this month. Now if only I could get Brutus here without paying a fortune…

  2. Pedantry Corner: The expression is actually “to whet the appetite” not “to wet the appetite”. Whetting is sharpening a knife on a grinding stone. Wetting is, of course, dampening.

    Examples:

“Reading Jean Snow whets my appetite for Japanese culture.”

“Reading Marxy wets my appetite for Japanese culture.”

  3. Mamichan, I haven’t checked out the new IDEA yet, but will probably do so today.

    Nick, duly noted!

  4. I missed Maria Ozawa on the last issue of Eyescream. I did see her latest Japanese TV interview though.
