Gmail

I forget to mention it, but I recently got a Gmail beta account (thanks again, KS). The big features are that you get 1GB of space for your stuff, and that since it’s from Google there are advanced search features. Haven’t played around with it that much, but I was mostly happy to get one because it’ll be nice for Yuko, who tends to use her webmail accounts (that are always full) to transfer her reports. Looks like it’s got Hotmail beat.

SUVs arn’t better just cause they are bigger.. but i guess if i had to use email htat put ads in each one.. gmail seems like the best deal..

  2. Trevor, I understand part of what you are saying … I have gmail for a while now and don;t use it much … BUT, reason that I moved away from web based mails a couple of years ago were several coming at the same time a) i got my first laptop, since then I just had my email with me all the time b) hotmail and yahoo started to suck, i had to spend way too much time keeping my mailboxes clean, in hotmail i could only install so many filter … so .. i gave up. c) back then for a while I could still get my hotmail email downloaded to entourage …. d) back then I could not check my work email from home or my private email at work .. so .. that made hotmail useful, until they firewalled those :)

Now i am giving gmail a try .. i like the conversation setup, i like that I got a short email address … I am planning on letting go of my overspammed (and overprized) @mac.com when they want the next 99$

If you wanna try gmail, i should get some new invites soon.

  4. Jean,

If you would like an account for Yuko just drop me a line, I’ve got a few extra invites I’d be happy to give away.

Mind you, I’m sure you’ll get some invites pretty quickly through your own account, but whatever works.

  5. Well, I don’t really use Webmail services (I have .Mac, so when I travel I use the .Mac webmail service, which gives me access to my mac.com address). Believe it or not, but there are some people that never delete any messages (I’m not one of those people). Yuko is like that, and her accounts are always full. James, cheers for the offer, I’m sure Yuko will be very happy to get an account of her own.

  7. I’m one of those who tend not to delete (except spam and other crap). My Eudora inbox is currently about 110MB. :)

  8. I’m becoming a big fan of gmail. I’m also the one who never delete e-mail and that gave me a big hassle to switch between various free-mail accounts.
I know that some people are concerning about the privacy issue because gmail is scanning your messages to provide custom ad. But the truth is, any mail provider can scan your mail whenever they want, so it’s better to hear from gmail openly saying that they’re doing that. In my opinion, gmail ads are not that bad compare to the flashing, animating ads of other web-mail providers. Good Day!

  9. Yet GMail’s ads are targetted according to the email’s text, and it can offer a company’s client alternatives (automatic search of similar companies). Perhaps not all bad for the client, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some companies will refuse to email GMail accounts and send you a blank email saying “Please email us from another email account.”.

  10. Now that just wouldnt be a blank email now would it? ;)

Anyway, has anyone else tried sending a Japanese mail from gmail? I emailed my pc and it worked fine, but then emailed my phone and it was all garbage.

  11. Well I meant “without a formal corporate signature (which could trigger ads of competitors)”. : )

I don’t have GMail, but a guess is that it may be sending in UTF-8 which is currently not understood by most phones (which only speak Shift_JIS).
