i enjoy your site and visit regularly. keep researching and sharing: i’m learning heaps about contemporary japanese culture thanks to your efforts…
Nice page Martine! (And nice site too! I’ll be keeping an eye on it!)
Have you seen the colorful ones in Kichijoji (Tokyo) featuring manga-style firemen? They’re my favorite! They would make a nice addition to your collection. :)
Yeah, that’s a nice page Martine, and hope you don’t mind that I linked to it in a post.
thought you’d like it, jean. thanks for putting a link up, i guess it means i should update the page with my pictures from chiba….
and patrick, hi! i haven’t been to kichioji, must make a trip of it. manga firemen, sounds very cool. i was actually thinking of putting up a mention on my manholes page that i would accept submissions…. i don’t think i’ll ever see every manhole in japan, but between all the internet users with digital cameras, we might get most of the place covered…..
Next time I go to Kichijoji I’ll try to get a few shots for you then. :) Keep up your good work!
Wow…who would have imagined, decorated manhole covers. Maybe the U.S. should take a hint from this, or maybe not. Cool though!

The Superfuture Superguides are a series of PDF travel guides to some of your favorites cities, updated monthly, and obsessively compiling the best places to shop, eat, and drink. The Tokyo guide is edited by Jean Snow.
Jean Snow is a regular contributor to Wired magazine's game blog, Game|Life, covering daily game news from Japan and beyond.
He is also the design/culture editor at Neojaponisme, a web journal covering social and cultural aspects of Japan. Read the manifesto, by founder and chief editor W. David Marx, here.
PauseTalk is a regular series of events that take place at Cafe Pause on the first Monday of every month, with a start time of 20:00. The idea is to create a forum where Tokyo-based creatives can get together and discuss their own projects, as well as cultural currents of the city. The next edition happens June 2.
