The koinobori, which you see floating in the wind, are used to celebrate boys day (May 5th). The picture was taken in Koma, where we spent the afternoon yesterday walking around and enjoying the open air. The next few days of pics will be from that outing.

They are called “koi nobori”, and they are a kind of flag that are posted to celebrate boy’s day (girls have the dolls, on March 3rd).
Thanks for the info! :)
I was wondering about these recently when they were showing up everywhere.
Thanks for the info. Yuko told me the same thing.
My parents-in-law bought my son a koinobori a couple of weeks ago. Seeing these in Japan this time of year brings back a lot of memories for me, for growing up in Hawaii (with its large Japanese immigrant population), we always celebrated Boys Day and hung koinobori.
I’ve been meaning to post some pics of our new koinobori, but after seeing this pic i must say ours look positively wimpy. We only have 5 or so “carp”. In more rural parts, these things get quite huge.
Yeah, the ones out in Koma were huge.
It’s interesting to hear that Japanese culture has infiltrated the life of all Hawaiians. I’ve heard that there are many Japanese families there, but didn’t know what kind of influence they had on the rest of the populace (to what extent).
